Search and Rescue Services

NIMASA is responsible for the implementation of Search and Rescue operations in line with the SAR Convention and has primary responsibility to the International Community for merchant vessels in our territorial waters and this includes both the internal (waters which accommodate the current port regime in Nigeria) and international that spans through the Gulf of Guinea.

Nigeria is the Headquarters of a Sub-regional Search and Rescue operations. Nigerian MRCC is equipped with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) which was adopted in 1988 through an amendment to SOLAS ’74.

Other suprepebding function includes the supervision and implementation of NIMASA Maritime SAR plan and Emergency Management, Articulation of SAR, Supervises general maritime logistic support for patrol against piracy & other illegal activities in Nigeria coastal waters and Monitoring maritime disaster & emergency management administrative operation in close liaison with National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
